What this framework covers
Industrial energy transition is not a single subject but a stack of levers: metering consumption at the right granularity, reducing process needs, recovering waste heat, electrifying or substituting fuels, producing or contracting decarbonised energy, and managing flexibility and load shedding. On top of this come investment trade-offs, production team competence, and the ability to hold a trajectory across several budget cycles. Each lever has its own timeframe and its own owner within the organisation.
In practice, steering runs into simple questions that are rarely settled. Does metering go down to workshop and utility level, or does it stop at the delivery point? Are the gains achieved on a furnace or a line verified after the works, or only estimated in the investment case? Who decides between a heat recovery project and replacing a piece of production equipment, and on what criterion? Most sites have ideas and one-off measurements, less often a sustained trajectory that is comparable from one entity to another.
The context itself has shifted. For a long time the subject was driven by energy cost, with reactive sobriety plans. It is now structuring itself around long-term commitments, process electrification and the actual availability of connected power. One frequent confusion is worth clearing up: energy maturity is not carbon maturity. A site can cut its footprint by switching supplier without having improved process efficiency, and vice versa. The assessment separates the two, while showing where they converge.
A compliance check ends with a yes or no against a given requirement. A maturity assessment asks a different question: what level of control does each practice sit at, and what concrete action moves it to the next level. The score per theme and the gap to target generate the action plan, which the AI groups into a prioritised roadmap. The service catalogue then opens a solution against each item, with its cost, timeframe and expected impact on the score.
The framework is ready to use and adapts to your site portfolio. Existence of a multi-year trajectory, executive committee sponsorship, roles and responsibilities, alignment with the investment plan, periodic review of commitments.
Metering and consumption data
Granularity of metering by workshop and utility, reliability and frequency of readings, historisation, reconciliation with billing, use within production tools.
Process performance
Knowledge of specific consumption per product or line, identification of significant energy uses, settings and operation, drift monitoring, comparison between equivalent lines.
Utilities and heat recovery
State of steam, compressed air, cooling and lighting networks, leak detection, inventory of waste heat sources, heat recovery projects launched and verified.

Frequently asked questions
Does this assessment lead to a certification?
No. This is a maturity framework, with no certifying body and no binding requirement. It measures where your practices stand and sets out the trajectory to progress. If you are separately pursuing an energy management system, the assessment provides a reusable foundation.
How does this differ from an energy audit?
An energy audit covers a site’s flows and savings potential at a given point in time. The maturity assessment covers the organisation’s ability to identify, decide, deliver and verify. The two complement each other: the audit says where the gains are, the assessment says why they have not yet been captured.
How long does the assessment take?
The short version can be completed in a single working session. The full version, run collaboratively with several contributors per site, typically spans one to two weeks, with most of the time spent gathering input from production, maintenance and procurement.
Can the framework be adapted to our processes?
Yes. Themes, questions and level wording can all be changed. The AI produces a variant tailored to your energy uses from your internal documents, or you start from a blank base. The framework is yours.
How can sites with different processes be compared?
The comparison covers steering practices, not absolute consumption. A foundry site and an assembly site can be compared on metering quality, gains verification or governance. Benchmarking across business units builds on this common base.
Is the carbon topic covered?
Partly, through the energy mix and electrification. Emissions accounting, scopes and offsetting strategy belong to a separate framework. A cross-cutting roadmap consolidates both assessments without duplicating actions.
What does the action plan produced contain?
Every gap between the score achieved and the target generates an action. The AI groups these into a prioritised roadmap, per site or consolidated across the portfolio. The service catalogue opens a solution against each item, with cost, timeframe and impact on the score.
