Are the energy gains expected from an efficiency project verified after commissioning?

What this framework covers

The framework covers the full energy management set-up of a production site: instrumentation and metering, knowledge of significant energy uses, performance indicators tied to activity levels, efficiency plans for utilities and processes, heat recovery, control of power demand, team training and investment governance. It draws on the ISO 50000 family of standards without limiting itself to a management system: what is assessed is the industrial organisation’s actual capacity to reduce consumption and hold that reduction over time.

In practice, the difficulty is not technical, it is organisational. The data often exists, scattered between the building management system, the line PLC, the supplier invoice and a spreadsheet kept by an energy manager. How many of your sites can isolate the consumption of a production line from that of the utilities feeding it? Are your indicators normalised by production volume and weather conditions, or are you comparing months against each other without accounting for the production mix? Who decides to shut down a compressor at weekends, and on what basis?

The context has changed in nature. Energy price volatility has moved the subject from the technical department to the executive committee, and non financial reporting requirements have made consumption figures binding. A confusion often recurs: having a recent energy audit or a management system certification says nothing about the level of operational maturity. A site can have a fully documented action plan and still not know whether the expected gains were actually delivered, for lack of measurement before and after.

An audit ends with a finding: the requirement is met, or it is not. The maturity assessment answers a different question: at what level of control does each theme sit, and what precise action moves it to the next level. This shift is what makes the result usable within an industrial transformation programme, because the gap between the score and the target directly produces actions that are ordered, costed and assigned to an owner.

Frequently asked questions

Does this assessment replace a regulatory energy audit?

No, the two are different things. The energy audit quantifies technical opportunities at a given site. The maturity assessment evaluates the organisation’s capacity to identify, decide, deliver and verify these actions over time. It reads well either before or after an audit.

Do we need an energy management system already in place?

No. The framework applies as well to a site with no formalised approach as to one that is already structured. In the first case, it frames the starting point. In the second, it reveals the themes where the system exists on paper but produces no measurable effect.

How long does the assessment take?

The short version takes 20 to 30 minutes for an energy manager or plant director to complete. The full version involves several contributors (utilities, maintenance, production, procurement) and generally spans one to two weeks, most of the time being spent on data collection.

Can several factories be compared with each other?

Yes, that is the main use case across an industrial estate. Each site is assessed on the same grid, the benchmark positions business units against each other and against their own past assessments. A cross site roadmap then consolidates the sites’ action plans.

Can the framework be adapted to our sector?

Yes. You can change the questions, levels and themes, or add to them. The AI adapts the grid to the energy intensity of your processes, your energy carriers and your vocabulary, and can build a variant from your internal documents.

How is the action plan costed?

Every gap between the score achieved and the target generates an action. The service catalogue matches a solution to each item of the plan, with its cost, timeframe and expected impact on the score. The AI groups everything into a prioritised roadmap.

Where is the data hosted?

In France, at OVH, with backup at Scaleway. No transfer outside the European Union. The AI models used can be selected, including from European providers.
