ISO 55001 Maturity · Physical and Industrial Asset Management

Your asset management, measured against ISO 55001 and turned into a costed action plan.

10 themes, 90 questions, a 5-level scale. And the action that moves each level to the next.

The framework’s 10 themes, already written from L1 to L5. One company, one business unit, or 300 at once.

An example

This could be your situation.

Take one company as an example: three sites, three spreadsheets, no shared answer.

01

Nobody can consolidate.

Nordhavn Industries, 2,400 people in Hamburg, Lyon and Porto. A client asks where the group stands. Each site answers in its own spreadsheet, with its own scales.

02

Three weeks, a single base.

One ISO 55001:2024 assessment launched across all three sites at once, from the managers’ interview notes. The framework was already written, its 10 themes and levels L1 to L5 too.

03

Two costs avoided before being committed.

A score of 53 out of 100, with the gap concentrated on three themes. The AI companion spotted that two actions duplicated those of another audit. The committee report took one sentence to request.

What it saved them

  • 3sites measured on the same base, instead of three questionnaires to reconcile
  • 2duplicate actions caught before the spend
  • 1committee report, with no manual rework

These figures are an example. They could be yours.

The standard imposes processes. Datamensio says where you stand.

01

The framework is already written

Themes, questions and levels L1 to L5, all written. You do not start from an empty spreadsheet.

02

The score lands the same day

Online, by self-assessment link or in interview. Theme by theme, comparable over time.

03

The gap becomes a costed plan

Every step up carries its action. The AI prioritises on expected effect, not on the order of the standard.

04

Progress can be demonstrated

Campaign after campaign, against your target and against your own past. That is what your board asks for.

The maturity scale

One level, the next, and the action that links the two.

It is this mechanism (one level, the level above, and the action that links the two) that turns an observation into a trajectory.

Is asset criticality defined and used to guide maintenance plans and investments?

  1. N1

No formal prioritisation. Priorities are decided based on urgency and staff experience.

  2. N2

A criticality rating exists for part of the fleet, but it is outdated and does not guide maintenance plans.

  3. N3

Criticality is established across the whole fleet using a common method and forms the basis for preventive maintenance plans.

  4. N4

Criticality factors in safety, production and cost considerations, is reviewed after incidents and feeds into investment decisions.

  5. N5

The rating is reviewed periodically based on failure history and monitoring data, with traceability of revisions and comparison across sites.

Action to move from L2 to L3

Extend the criticality rating to all equipment using a single scale validated by the technical department, record it in the CMMS asset register, and check during the monthly maintenance review that each preventive plan is consistent with the assigned criticality.

What this framework covers

ISO 55001 is the requirements standard of the 55000 family, complemented by ISO 55000 for terminology and principles and ISO 55002 for implementation guidance. It calls for an asset management system: a policy, a strategic asset management plan, objectives broken down into operational plans, defined roles, controlled asset information and performance evaluation. Its scope covers the full life cycle, from acquisition to decommissioning, not just the maintenance of equipment in operation.

The difficulty is rarely technical. Maintenance teams know their machines. What is missing is the link between decisions on the ground and organisational objectives. Does the strategic asset management plan actually translate industrial objectives, or does it remain a management document with no bearing on trade-offs? Are replacement decisions based on life cycle cost, or on age and urgency? Is the asset register reliable enough for an investment decision to rest on it?

The 2024 revision tightened this link with strategy and clarified the treatment of asset data and associated risks. A common confusion persists: ISO 55001 is not a maintenance standard. A highly structured maintenance department, with a well-populated CMMS and solid preventive plans, can still sit at a modest maturity level against the standard if criticalities are not prioritised according to organisational stakes and if investment decisions fall outside the system.

The maturity assessment answers a different question from a certification audit. The audit concludes with a gap or a compliance finding. The assessment places each practice on a progressive scale and points to the action that moves it up a level. Across a fleet spread over several sites, it allows business units to be compared with one another and progress to be tracked from one cycle to the next. Datamensio measures maturity and prepares for the audit; it does not issue any certification.

Within Datamensio, the framework is ready to use. You can adapt it to your industrial context: the AI adjusts themes, questions and levels according to the CMMI method, or builds a variant from your own documents, asset policy, maintenance plans or group standards.

The themes assessed

  • Context and strategic alignment

Consideration of stakeholder expectations, scope of the asset management system, alignment between organisational objectives and asset management objectives.

  • Policy and strategic asset management plan

Existence and communication of the policy, content of the strategic asset management plan (SAMP), breakdown into asset management plans, planning horizon and review.

  • Leadership, roles and responsibilities

Management commitment, allocation of asset responsibilities, decision-makers’ authority, coordination between sites and the central function.

  • Fleet knowledge and asset data

Completeness and structure of the asset register, technical hierarchy, quality of CMMS data, management of history and configurations.

  • Criticality and risk management

Method for prioritising equipment, failure mode analysis, HSE and continuity risks, treatment of asset-related risks.

  • Life cycle and investment decisions

Life cycle cost, repair-or-replace trade-offs, multi-year renewal plan, integration of new assets and decommissioning.

  • Maintenance plans and execution

Preventive, condition-based and corrective strategies, spare parts management, planning and scheduling, control of subcontracting.

  • Competence and documented information

Qualifications and competence of personnel, awareness, procedures and technical standards, control of documents and their updating.

  • Performance and monitoring

Availability, reliability and cost indicators, management review, internal audits, treatment of non-conformities and gaps.

  • Continual improvement and lessons learned

Analysis of recurring failures, corrective and preventive actions, comparison across sites and over time, updating of plans.

A short version of the framework, with 30 questions, is available for the online self-assessment. The full version covers 10 themes and 90 questions.

Frequently asked questions

Is ISO 55001 certifiable?

Yes, it is the requirements standard of the 55000 family and an accredited body can certify your asset management system. Datamensio does not certify: the assessment measures your maturity level, documents the gaps and prepares you for the audit.

What is the difference between this assessment and a certification audit?

An audit checks whether requirements are met and concludes with a compliance finding or a gap. The assessment places each practice on a maturity scale and points to the action that moves it up a level. The former validates; the latter maps out a trajectory.

How long does the assessment take?

The short version takes 20 to 30 minutes for a manager who knows the set-up. The full version, run collaboratively with maintenance, methods, HSE and management control, generally spans one to two weeks, most of the time being spent on data collection.

Can the framework be adapted to our fleet and sector?

Yes. Themes, questions and levels can be modified, and the AI produces a variant based on your internal standards, whether for a production fleet, linear infrastructure or a technical property portfolio. The framework belongs to you.

Do respondents need maintenance expertise?

Questions focus on management and decision-making practices, not equipment technology. Some require input from a methods contact or a data manager: collaborative mode lets you assign these questions to the right person.

How can several sites be compared with each other?

The same framework is deployed across each business unit, making scores comparable by theme. A cross-site roadmap consolidates the assessments and groups common actions rather than duplicating them site by site.

Is the assessment useful if we are launching a predictive maintenance programme?

Yes, and ideally beforehand rather than after. Predictive maintenance relies on a reliable asset register, established criticalities and usable history. The assessment shows which of these prerequisites are already in place.

Where is the data hosted?

In France, with OVH, backed up at Scaleway. No transfer outside the European Union. The AI models used can be selected, including from European providers.
