Are scrap flows identified and quantified at the level of each production line?

    No tracking by line. The only known volume is the overall tonnage shown on the collection contractor’s invoices.

    A few lines are counted, on the initiative of an area manager. Measurement methods differ from one workshop to another.

  3. N3

    Each line has scrap tracking by family, following a common method. Data is consolidated and reviewed at a set interval.

    Scrap is linked to causes (settings, changeover, material, non-conformance) and tracked as a variance against a standard by product reference.

What this framework covers

Green manufacturing covers a set of industrial practices aimed at reducing material and energy consumption, limiting emissions and eliminating scrap that is not recovered. Zero waste is its operational translation: applying the hierarchy of prevention, reuse, recycling and recovery, leaving only what has no other outlet for disposal. This is not a binding text but a set of measurable practices: product eco-design, material choices, process settings, scrap flow management, in-house recovery, and relationships with suppliers and material off-takers.

In practice, the subject is hard to steer because it is spread across teams that do not speak the same language. Design engineering decides on materials, production generates the scrap, maintenance affects non-conformance rates, general services sign the collection contracts. A few concrete questions then arise. Do you know your scrap flows by line, or only the overall tonnage invoiced by the contractor? Are offcuts fed back into the process counted as avoided or as recycled? Is a site with a high recovery rate better than one that simply produces less waste?

A confusion often recurs: zero waste is equated with a high recovery rate, sometimes presented as a landfill diversion target. This is a treatment indicator, not an industrial performance one. Sending more scrap to recycling improves the ratio without reducing the material actually consumed. The same gap exists between source reduction, which requires changes to the product and the process, and improved sorting, which remains an end-of-line fix. A useful assessment tells the two apart and measures prevention and treatment separately.

The maturity assessment does not ask whether a practice is present or absent. It places each theme on a progressive scale, from an isolated gesture carried by one person through to a standardised practice that is measured and improved. The score obtained is compared against a target, and the gap between the two produces the action plan. Each item in the plan carries a cost, a timeframe and an expected impact on the score, allowing a trade-off between a quick sorting win and a longer eco-design project.

    Transport and conditioning packaging, returnable and shuttle packaging, return rates, logistics breakage, pooling with suppliers.

Frequently asked questions

Does this framework lead to a certification?

No. Green manufacturing and zero waste are not overseen by a certification body. This is a maturity framework: it measures the level of your practices and sets out the trajectory for progress. Results are used for internal steering and for reporting to your customers.

How is this different from a standard environmental audit?

An audit checks for the presence of arrangements and concludes with a list of gaps. The maturity assessment places each theme on a progressive scale and pairs each level with the action that moves it to the next. The output is not a findings report but a costed action plan.

How long does the assessment take?

The short version takes 20 to 30 minutes to complete by a manager who knows the site. The full version, run collaboratively with production, HSE, methods and design engineering, typically spans one to two weeks, with most of the time spent gathering flow data.

Can the framework be adapted to our processes?

Yes. Themes, questions and levels can all be changed, and the AI rephrases the framework in the vocabulary of your processes, whether machining, plastics, food processing or chemicals. You can also start from your own standards to build a variant.

How can sites with different processes be compared?

The assessment covers management practices, not production ratios. Two sites with different processes can therefore be placed on the same scale. The benchmark across business units highlights the themes with the widest gaps, and a cross-site roadmap consolidates the assessments into a group-wide plan.

Can the results be used for our non-financial reporting?

The assessment does not replace regulatory reporting. It does, however, document the state of practices and the actions under way, which usefully feeds the qualitative part of your disclosures and responses to customer questionnaires.

Where is the data hosted?

In France, with OVH, backed up with Scaleway. No transfer outside the European Union. The AI models used can be selected, including from European providers.
