What this framework covers
The Industry 4.0 readiness index assesses an industrial organisation’s ability to use digital technologies in its operations. It does not focus on any single technology, but on the full set of conditions that enable their use: instrumented machinery, shop floor connectivity, quality and availability of production data, system integration (ERP, MES, SCADA, CMMS), team skills, work organisation and business model. Each dimension is positioned on a progressive maturity scale, from the uninstrumented site through to production driven by data.
In practice, the difficulty is not launching projects but knowing where you stand. Industrial groups accumulate initiatives: a predictive maintenance pilot on one line, a traceability project on one site, an energy dashboard elsewhere. The questions an industrial management team asks are simpler and harder. Which production data can actually be used today, and on which equipment? Which sites can absorb another digital building block, and which must first fix their foundations? What does moving up a level cost, and in what order should it happen?
A common confusion is mistaking equipment for readiness. A shop floor can be fitted with recent, connected machinery without any data being usable, for lack of harmonised protocols, an equipment identification framework or someone accountable for machine data. Conversely, a site with an older fleet can reach a good level of control by instrumenting a few critical points. Readiness is measured across the whole chain, from signal acquisition to the decision taken on the shop floor.
The maturity assessment answers a different question from a technical audit. An audit records whether a piece of equipment, an interface or a piece of software is present. The assessment positions practice on a scale: what level of control the site has reached, and the precise action that moves it up a level. It is this gap between the observed score and the target that produces the action plan, then the roadmap consolidated across the entire industrial footprint.

Frequently asked questions
Is the Industry 4.0 readiness index a certifiable standard?
No. It is a maturity assessment framework, with no certification body behind it. The assessment is used to position your sites and build an investment trajectory, not to obtain a label.
How does it differ from a technical site audit?
A technical audit records whether equipment and interfaces are present. The maturity assessment positions practice on a progressive scale and indicates the action that moves it up a level. It also covers organisation, skills and actual data use, which a technical audit rarely addresses.
How long does the assessment take?
The short version takes 20 to 30 minutes per site. The full version, run collaboratively with production, maintenance, IT and quality, generally spans one to two weeks, most of the time being spent gathering input from teams.
Can several plants be compared with each other?
Yes. The same framework applied across several sites produces comparable scores per theme, with benchmarking between business units and against previous assessments. A cross-site roadmap then consolidates the action plans from all sites.
Does the framework adapt to our sector?
Yes. Questions, levels and themes can be modified, and AI adjusts them to a continuous process, a discrete assembly line or a regulated environment. It can also build a version from your industrial master plan. The framework belongs to you.
Do you need technical expertise to answer?
The questions cover practices and organisation, not machine settings. A site director or a methods manager can answer them. Collaborative mode allows infrastructure or application architecture questions to be assigned to the right contact.
How is the action plan costed?
Each gap between the observed score and the target generates an action. The service catalogue matches a solution to each action, with its cost, timeframe and impact on the score. AI then groups these actions into a prioritised roadmap.
