Are eco-design criteria built into the life cycle of digital projects?

What this framework covers
Sustainable IT brings together three distinct families of practice. Green IT reduces the footprint of the information system itself: device lifespan, reuse rates, energy efficiency of server rooms and the cloud, and the sobriety of software architectures. IT for Green puts digital technology to work for the organisation’s environmental goals: measuring consumption, optimising logistics, and managing environmental data. Eco-design treats the digital service as a product whose life cycle is managed, from design to decommissioning.
In practice, these areas are hard to steer because responsibility is scattered across several departments. Who actually knows the average age of the fleet and where it ends up? Is cloud consumption tied to identified services, or lost in a single bill? Do application projects factor in an environmental criterion at appraisal stage, or only in the rhetoric? Most organisations have public commitments and one-off initiatives, but no mechanism for stating what level of control they have actually reached.
The context has fundamentally changed. The CSRD directive, with the ESRS standards, requires environmental data that is substantiated and auditable, and digital technology contributes on two fronts: as a source of impact and as a source of the data itself. In France, the general framework for eco-designing digital services and the REEN law have established a shared vocabulary. The common confusion remains the same: offsetting is not reducing, and a well-written non-financial report says nothing about the actual level of engineering practice.
The maturity assessment answers a different question than reporting does. Reporting asks: what are your indicators and are they substantiated. The assessment asks: what level of control does each practice sit at, and what specific action moves it to the next level. This is what allows two business units to be compared, one’s own progress to be tracked over time, and investments to be prioritised rather than multiplying initiatives.

Frequently asked questions
Is sustainable IT subject to certification?
No body certifies an organisation as "sustainable IT" against a single standard. The subject is managed as a transformation effort: an observed maturity level, a target, a roadmap. Datamensio measures and prepares the decisions, it issues no label.
What is the difference between this assessment and a carbon footprint of the IT estate?
The carbon footprint produces a volume of emissions at a given date. The maturity assessment qualifies the practices that produce those emissions and those that will reduce them. The two complement each other: the measurement gives the order of magnitude, the assessment gives the levers and their sequence.
How long does the assessment take?
The short version takes 20 to 30 minutes for someone who knows the SI to complete. The full version involves several contributors, IT, procurement, CSR, architecture, and generally spans one to two weeks, most of the time going into gathering input from the teams.
Can the framework be adapted to our context?
Yes. The themes, questions and level wording can all be changed, and you can add your own axes. The AI suggests variants by sector or fleet type, and can build a version from your internal policy.
How do we compare several business units?
The same framework is rolled out to each entity, which makes scores comparable by theme. A cross-entity roadmap consolidates the assessments and groups recurring actions, rather than treating each entity in isolation.
Does this assessment support CSRD reporting?
It does not replace reporting, but it feeds its qualitative component: state of practices, action plans, governance. It also highlights environmental data that is missing or not reliable enough to publish.
Do respondents need technical expertise?
The questions cover management and engineering practices, not configurations. Some require input from an architect or operations manager: the collaborative mode allows these questions to be assigned to the right person.
