Are the emission factors used documented, justified and kept up to date?

What this framework covers
ISO 14064 has three parts. Part 1 specifies requirements for quantifying and reporting GHG emissions and removals at organisation level: organisational boundary, direct emissions, indirect emissions from imported energy, other indirect emissions, uncertainties, base year. Part 2 covers reduction or removal projects, including their baseline scenario and monitoring. Part 3 describes how verification and validation are conducted. The 2018 version of Part 1 replaced the three scopes logic with a classification into direct and indirect emissions.
The difficulty is not the method, it is sustaining it over time. The inventory is often produced once a year by a small team, with data collected from sites that run different systems. Are emission factors documented, versioned and justified, or simply carried over from a legacy file? Who validates the organisational boundary and against what consolidation rule? Is the base year recalculated when the boundary changes, through an acquisition, a divestment, a change of method? Does the traceability of primary data allow you to answer a verifier without reconstructing the entire history.
The context has tightened. The CSRD and the ESRS E1 standard require gross emissions by category, a base year and a documented reduction trajectory, which assumes exactly the practices described by ISO 14064. One confusion keeps coming back: ISO 14064-1 organises quantification, the GHG Protocol provides a widely used accounting framework, and the two are compatible. The useful question is not which vocabulary to choose, but whether the inventory is reproducible, documented and verifiable by a third party.
The maturity assessment answers a different question from verification. The verifier concludes on the assurance they can give to a published statement. The assessment places each practice on a progressive scale: where does data collection stand, how are uncertainties handled, what is the governance of the inventory, and what precise action moves you up to the next level. The first prepares the second and supports budget decisions.

Frequently asked questions
Is ISO 14064 certifiable?
It does not lead to management system certification. Part 3 organises verification of the GHG statement by a third party body, resulting in a level of assurance. The Datamensio assessment measures the maturity of your practices and prepares for that verification, it does not replace it.
What is the difference between this assessment and an inventory verification?
Verification covers a statement that has already been produced and concludes on its reliability. The assessment places each practice on a maturity scale and points to the action that moves you forward. It is used upstream, to decide where to invest before bringing in a verifier.
How does this fit with the GHG Protocol and the CSRD?
ISO 14064-1 and the GHG Protocol are compatible and rest on the same quantification principles. The CSRD’s ESRS E1 requirements build on these practices. A cross cutting roadmap lets you address all three without duplicating actions.
How long does the assessment take?
The short version takes 20 to 30 minutes to complete. The full version, run collaboratively, generally spans one to two weeks, most of the time going into data collection from sites and management control.
Can the framework be adapted to our business?
Yes. Questions, levels and themes can all be edited, and you can add themes specific to your sector, industrial processes, fleet, agriculture. The AI can also build a variant from your inventory procedure.
Can several sites or subsidiaries be compared?
Yes. The same framework can be run as a campaign across several business units, with a score per theme and a benchmark between entities and against previous campaigns. Action plans consolidate into a single roadmap.
Do respondents need technical expertise?
The questions cover quantification and governance practices, not the calculations themselves. Some require input from an energy manager or a management controller: collaborative mode lets you route those questions to the right person.
