What this framework covers
ISO 14046 sets the framework for assessing the water footprint of a product, process or organisation. It builds on the life cycle assessment methodology of the ISO 14040 and 14044 series, and imposes a distinction many organisations overlook: the volume of water withdrawn says nothing about impact. The standard requires characterising the local availability of the resource, the degradation of its quality, net consumption and degraded water, then documenting the methodological choices made. A critical review is required whenever results are communicated externally.
In practice, the water footprint is a difficult subject to manage because data is scattered across sites, suppliers and processes. Do meters capture significant water uses, or only the site inlet? Is discharge quality documented to the same standard as volumes? Do upstream purchases, often the dominant share of the footprint, rely on supplier data or on generic factors? Most organisations have consumption figures without having an impact assessment they can actually use to make decisions.
One common confusion is worth clearing up: ISO 14046 is not the Water Footprint Network’s "water footprint", whose green, blue and grey water approach belongs to a different accounting logic. The regulatory context adds further weight to the issue, between local water management plans, restriction orders during periods of stress, and the transparency expectations set by the CSRD directive on water and marine resources. A robust assessment becomes a reusable asset for several stakeholders.
The maturity assessment answers a different question from the audit. The audit asks whether methodological requirements are met and concludes with a gap. The assessment places each practice on a progressive scale, from no practice in place to documented periodic review, and points to the precise action that moves it up a level. It lends itself to comparison across business units and to measuring progress over time.

Frequently asked questions
Is ISO 14046 certifiable?
No. It is a methodology standard: it sets out how to conduct a water footprint assessment. What a third party verifies is the study itself, through a mandatory critical review whenever results are communicated externally. The Datamensio assessment measures the maturity of your practices and prepares for that review, it does not issue any certificate.
What is the difference between this assessment and a compliance audit?
The audit checks whether methodological requirements are met and concludes with a gap. The assessment places each practice on a maturity scale and points to the action that moves it up a level. The two complement each other: the assessment prepares, the audit validates.
How long does the assessment take?
The short version can be completed in a single session by an environmental manager. The full version, run collaboratively with sites, processes and procurement, takes one to two weeks, most of the time being spent gathering metering and supplier data.
Do you need an existing life cycle assessment?
No. The assessment covers management and evaluation practices, not the results of an existing study. It actually tells you whether your data and method allow you to carry out an assessment compliant with the standard, and where to start.
Can the framework be adapted to our sector?
Yes. The themes, questions and levels can all be modified, and the AI generates a variant adapted to a sector or process from your own documents. You can also start from a blank base and keep ownership of your framework.
How can several sites be compared with each other?
The same framework can be deployed across as many business units as needed. Scores by theme can be compared across entities and against previous assessments, and a cross-site roadmap consolidates action plans from several sites without duplicating tasks.
Does the assessment cover the water section of sustainability reporting?
It forms a solid base for it: data traceability, characterisation of local context and the reduction plan are exactly what reporting requires you to document. The framework can be combined with a broader environmental assessment to cover the full expected scope.
