Is the match between equipment category and the classification of the installation zone checked before commissioning?

    No check identified. Equipment category is not compared against zone classification before installation.

  2. N2

    The check takes place for some projects, on the initiative of the engineer or technician concerned, with no defined checkpoint and no record kept.

  3. N3

    The check is built into the commissioning process, carried out by an identified function and recorded for each piece of equipment installed in a zone.

What this framework covers

Directive 2014/34/EU governs the placing on the market of equipment, protective systems, safety devices and components intended for explosive atmospheres. It distinguishes group I, reserved for underground workings and surface installations of mines exposed to firedamp and combustible dust, from group II for other uses. Each group is assigned categories (M1, M2 for group I, 1, 2, 3 for group II) that determine the required level of protection, the conformity assessment procedure and the possible involvement of a notified body. It requires CE marking accompanied by the specific marking, the EU declaration of conformity, technical documentation and instructions.

In operation, the difficulty is not knowing the text but maintaining the chain of evidence over time. On an extractive site or a processing plant, equipment arrives through different channels: new purchases, rentals, transfers between sites, reconditioned equipment, assemblies built in house. The practical questions always come back to the same points. For each piece of equipment installed in a zone, do you hold the EU declaration of conformity and the category actually required by the zone classification. Who checks, before ordering, that the equipment category matches the installation zone. What happens to compliance after a repair, a motor change or the addition of a sensor.

One confusion recurs in almost every assessment: that between Directive 2014/34/EU and Directive 1999/92/EC. The first is addressed to the manufacturer and to whoever places equipment on the market or puts it into service, it concerns the product. The second is addressed to the employer, it concerns the workplace, zone classification and the explosion protection document. An operator is concerned by both, and often by the first without knowing it: assembling a unit, substantially modifying a piece of equipment or importing equipment from outside the EU shifts part of the manufacturer’s obligations onto the operator. This shift is rarely tracked within organisations.

A compliance audit ends with a binary finding: the equipment is compliant, or it presents a gap. The maturity assessment answers a different question. At what level of control does the process that produces this compliance sit, and what specific action moves it up a level. A site may hold every certificate and have no repeatable process for future purchases. Another may have a solid process and old documentation gaps. The score per theme distinguishes these two situations, the gap to the target generates the action plan, and each item is assigned an owner and a deadline.

Frequently asked questions

Does the assessment serve as a certificate of compliance for our equipment?

No. Directive 2014/34/EU sets out conformity assessment procedures that, depending on the category, involve a notified body and result in an EU declaration of conformity issued by the manufacturer. Datamensio measures the maturity of your practices and prepares you for these milestones, it issues no certificate.

How is this different from an ATEX compliance audit?

The audit examines equipment and ends with a gap or a finding of compliance. The assessment places the process on a progressive scale and identifies the action that moves it up a level. The two complement each other: the assessment prepares and prioritises, the audit confirms.

What is the difference between 2014/34/EU and 1999/92/EC?

The first concerns the product and is addressed to the manufacturer or whoever places the equipment on the market. The second concerns the workplace and is addressed to the employer: zone classification, explosion protection document. An operator falls under both, and both frameworks are available in the catalogue.

How long does the assessment take?

The short version takes about thirty minutes to complete per site. The full version, run collaboratively with HSE, maintenance, engineering and procurement, typically spans one to two weeks, most of the time being spent retrieving technical files and declarations.

Can the framework be adapted to our activity?

Yes. Questions, levels and themes can be modified, and the AI produces a version based on your procedures or your equipment inventory. The distinction between underground group I operations and surface installations is handled this way without duplicating the framework.

How can several sites be compared with each other?

Each site is assessed against the same framework, which makes theme scores directly comparable. The benchmark ranks business units against each other and against their own past results. A cross site roadmap consolidates action plans from several sites.

Is technical expertise needed to answer?

The questions concern management practices, not the protection modes themselves. Some require input from a technician or the ATEX lead: collaborative mode allows these questions to be assigned to the right person, with tracking of missing answers.
